I wanted to share this article, “A wife, mother and soldier” — which was published in The Washington Times, about a month after Beth was activated in 2003 — without too much comment. Beth received her orders in mid January 2003, at probably a time of peak uncertainty, and we dropped her off at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, which at the time was on a high security alert, which made it all the more frightening. This event certainly changed my life at the time, and evidently it is continuing to shape it now. I wrote this article from the depths of despair:
